On January 20th, OSI Group proudly hosted the 2025 Frame Ceremony at the School of Optometry & Vision Science, University of Waterloo. Presented in collaboration with CAOS (Canadian Association of Optometry Students), the event honoured the achievements of 3rd-year Optometry students and Bridge Program international students as they enter the technical phase of their education.
A Shared Journey
The Frame Ceremony opened with a brief presentation by OSI Practice Advisor Jas Ryat, who provided students with key insights into how OSI Group can support their professional journey and the distinct advantages of independent ownership. This session set the stage for students to consider the paths they could take in their careers, reinforcing the value of independence and strategic decision-making in optometry.
Following Jas’s discussion, Dr. Munsa Rana took the stage to share her story of building Eye-OLOGY Optometry. Her presentation provided insights into sustaining an independent practice, highlighting the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit needed to thrive in today’s optometry landscape. Dr. Rana spoke candidly about her challenges and the rewards of charting her own path, prompting lively discussion among attendees eager to forge their own.
Frame Ceremony with Vision Avenue
The evening’s highlight came when OSI Group presented students with frames from Vision Avenue. Preselected by the recipients, these tokens of appreciation symbolized a new vision taking shape—a community invested in their future and the profession they’re poised to redefine.
The frame ceremony also marks a hands-on milestone. In their third year, Waterloo students move into the technical phase of their education, which includes mastering the craft of fitting lenses into frames.
To Those Who Made It Possible
As the night came to a close, attendees left with raffle prizes and a renewed sense of purpose, inspired by past achievements and motivated by future opportunities. Established in 2023, the Frame Ceremony remains, above all, a reminder of what can be accomplished when a community—grounded in science, design, and the shared mission of better care—comes together to celebrate its present and envision its future.
Special thanks to HOYA for their sponsorship and to OSI Practice Advisors Jas Ryat and Gurpreet Kaur, whose leadership fostered collaboration. Lastly, our deepest gratitude to CAOS for their partnership in helping us organize this rite of passage. A special thank you to Dr. Rana for his dedication and participation in our many student events, helping to promote and enhance the understanding of independent optometry.
